I AM AN IMMIGRANT. I am the grandchild of shoemakers from Marikina, east of Manila in the Philippines, where my mom and dad gave birth to me and my little sister. My parents pursued a love-letter marriage across the Pacific while my dad set up our family’s petition to immigrate to the US. On October 28, 1988, we left behind my mom’s family of 13, boarded a plane, and arrived at LAX. We moved into a duplex where our family of four shared the same bedroom, and in the winters we’d sleep in the living room because that was the only room with heat.

I AM AN ALUM OF THE LOS ANGELES AND LONG BEACH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. I am a proud product of our traditional public school systems and their attempts at integration: I was a Filipino kid at a predominantly African-American school, and a Filipino kid at a predominantly Latin@/x school. I remember the 1992 LA Uprising, which some call the riots. I remember Rodney King and Reginald Denny, my first images of police brutality and our brutality toward each other, the fire, the smoke, and the gunshots. As an immigrant and person of color, these moments taught me early on that we have a lot to do to fight institutional and interpersonal racism in our communities. And as I grew up, inequality revealed even more of its faces. I began to see how “the other side” lived when I received a scholarship to the University of Richmond, a private liberal arts university in Virginia. My more affluent peers could read music, had traveled to Europe, and wrote six-page papers with ease. Although I loved my LAUSD and LBUSD educations, my opportunities were not equal to the opportunities accessible to upper-class white families. It was then, during college, that I decided that this couldn’t be the world we leave for our future generations. I committed to battle our American inequalities by focusing on our youth and our public education system.

I'VE SPENT MY ENTIRE CAREER FIGHTING FOR OUR COMMUNITIES. I’ve been a public middle school teacher. I’ve worked to advance equity and justice in teacher preparation pipelines. I’ve become an organizer committed to building people power among youth, educators, and families. I’ve worked with individuals, schools, districts, and churches, and to date, I’ve worked with over 7,500 educators nationally to strengthen their ability to fight inequities faced by their communities. I support them and their students because they are the front-lines of the future, and arteries into our neighborhoods and families. I support them to deepen their relationships, to collectively envision what could be different, and to figure out how they -- together -- can win.

HE DEDICADO MI CARRERA COMPLETA LUCHANDO POR NUESTRAS COMUNIDADES.
